Romanesque capitals from Auvergne

 
In Romanesque churches, why are there so many capitals carved with such diverse and multiformed images ? Where are these capitals located ? How are they connected with each other and how do they relate to sacred space ? This site attemps to respond to these questions by offering new tools for the analysis of five churches from Auvergne (Saint-Pierre de Mozat, Saint-Nectaire, Notre-Dame-du-Port at Clermont-Ferrand, Notre-Dame d'Orcival and Saint-Marcellin de Chanteuges). The site comprises two parts :

• A topo-photographic corpus of capitals supplies a map enabling the user to visualize, locate and compare all the capitals of the edifice.
   




• Iter et Locus. Ritual Place and Arrangement of Sculpted Decoration in Romanesque Churches of Auvergne offers a general study of the capitals as well as a specific methodology to analyse the arrangement of sculpted decoration within sacred space.
