Sculpture in context
Romanesque capitals from Auvergne

Site designed and created by
Jérôme Baschet, Jean-Claude Bonne and Pierre-Olivier Dittmar

This site is the result of five years of collective research (2007-2012) carried out within the Groupe d'Anthropologie Historique de l'Occident Médiéval (GAHOM), part of the Centre de Recherches Historiques (UMR 8558, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique). It was supported by grants from the Agence Nationale pour la Recherche (France), as part of a broader project "A culture of the Book in a society of illiterates. Speaking, appearing, writing in medieval Europe", directed by Jean-Claude Schmitt.

The site comprises two distinct parts both related to the understanding of the sculptures with respect to their location and to the general distribution of capitals inside the entire ecclesiastical space.
